I called this Hancock when I volunteered, but I'm considering something a little different. I want to do Pomeroy Lakes if the trail is open, then Williams Pass from east to west, stopping at the Alpine Tunnel. Then take Tomichi Pass and Old Monarch Pass to Highway 50.

This is a really long day if you start at the Springs. I'll stay in Salida Friday and Saturday night and drive back Sunday. Does somebody have an idea for wheeling on Sunday before coming home?

Pomeroy rated 3-4 (traildamage.com)
Williams rated 5-6 (traildamage.com)
Tomichi not rated by traildamage.com. Chuck Wells rates it easier than Pomeroy.

Brad

How about Antero Peak? It's a beautiful drive with REALLY tight switchbacks all the way up.

Not to hijack but where you been hiding? I see it says Afgan in your loc. You still stationed in the Springs. Stay safe and when you get back we need to run Eagle rock at night again.

I thought about Antero. If there's interest, I'm up for it.

If you do Antero...I would like to hike up, do a little rock hounding for aquamarines and perhaps catch a ride down. Makes for a perfect to hike, rock hound and four-wheel!

New Plan: Hancock & Pomeroy Closed

With Hancock and Pomeroy closed due to washouts, here's the new plan.

Meet at Safeway on W. Colorado on Saturday at 7:30, leave at 8 for BV. We'll do Tincup and Cumberland Passes to get to the Alpine Tunnel from the backside. We'll run Williams Pass and drive to Hancock Lake where we'll camp for the night.

On Sunday, we'll run Tomichi and Old Monarch Passes back to Salida. Should be home by 3 pm or so.

Schedule Change

Due to eye surgery (Lasik), I need to move the dates to August 28-29. Hope this doesn't disturb anyone's schedule.

More info on the trails -

Tincup Pass is rated 2-3. The only tough part is "Old Tin Cup" which is optional. http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=120

Cumberland is even easier. (It's not rated by TrailDamage.)

Alpine Tunnel and Hancock Lakes is included in Hancock Pass which is rated 4. http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=245

Williams Pass is rated 5-6. The trail is narrow and rocky, but any rig with 32-32" tires will be okay. Lockers are not necessary. http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=247

Tomichi Pass is not rated by TrailDamage but called difficult by Chuck Wells due to the narrow shelf road.

Old Monarch Pass is easy.

S**t Happens

The HVAC malfunctioned and the laser shut down so the surgery was rescheduled ... and I have to move the trip another week to September 4-5.
